Summary

This project will use large datasets (Registry of Senior Australians, National Disability Data Asset), qualitative research (interviews with people with intellectual disability, family and key stakeholders) and co-design processes with lived experience experts and the community to achieve the intended outcomes. We will examine 1) current aged care utilisation in people with intellectual disability, 2) onset of conditions associated with ageing, functional decline and health needs to support healthy ageing in people with intellectual disability, and 3) barriers to access and unmet needs in the community.

Impact

A review, adjustment, and new definition of the age eligibility and clinical indicators specifically for people with intellectual disability, supported by new guiding principles on how care should be integrated across health and disability care sectors, will directly address the population’s critical unmet needs whilst enabling cross-care sector collaborations with our health system.
