Summary
Following the implementation of the NDIS in Australia, the practice of Positve Behaviour Support has experienced significnat development. Despite the continued emergence of research in the field, relatively little has focused on behaviour support practice leadership or supervision. Clinical supervision and practice leadership is recognised as a critical contributor to high quality evidence-informed practice in healthcare and community settings, and many frameworks exist in adjacent allied health disciplines. It is also recognised that quality practice supervision and access to clinical support and practice guidance in PBS are key enablers of high-quality behaviour support. This study draws on implementation science and reflective practice theory to critically examine the current state of practice leadership and clinical supervision within PBS in NDIS-funded service landscape. It aims the identify the key conditions, barriers, and enablers that shape supervision quality, and to generate evidence-based recommendations to inform future PBS supervision standards and practitioner guidance.
Impact
This research will contribute to the development of an evidence-informed supervision framework for Positive Behaviour Support within the Australian NDIS context. By identifying the individual, organisational, and systemic conditions that enable high-quality supervision, the study will inform future standards and guidance for practitioners. A key contribution is the inclusion of people with lived experience of disability, ensuring that recommendations are grounded in the perspectives of those who receive PBS services. Through strengthening supervision and practice leadership, the research aims to support consistent, rights-based practice, uphold the human rights of people with disability, and enhance the quality, effectiveness, and accountability of PBS service delivery.
