The development of autistic identity in self-identified autistic adults, their wellbeing and the impact of epistemic injustice

Summary

Self-identified autistic adults without a clinical autism diagnosis are at an increased likelihood of experiencing poor mental wellbeing, stigma and invalidation; and have less access to clinical supports and resources.

Impact

The proposed study seeks to understand the development of autistic identity in self-identified autistic adults and its links to their mental wellbeing. Specifically, this study aims to identify how autistic identity forms in this population, the positive and negative impacts of identity formation on their mental wellbeing and to understand their involvement in autistic communities.
